Vedic Meditation
The ancient form of Vedic Meditation focuses on a soothing affirmation or sound to distract the mind from what usually occupies it - mental chatter. Don’t you agree that our minds are always focusing on something, even when we are dreaming? We think about so many things that don’t really matter and are out of control. Don’t we think about our daily life a lot? Many times our thoughts are unhealthy, and these thoughts creep in on a pattern based on our past and future. This is why meditation is what we need; Vedic meditation is a perfect tool to engage in to give a break to our constantly occupied minds.
Integrating Vedic meditation can help to rewire our brains. Using this ancient Indian form of meditation slows the frequency of our thoughts. This Vedic meditation benefits busy people and even busier minds.
The term Vedic is derived from Sanskrit term Vedas, which are ancient Hindu scriptures. Veda means knowledge, truth, revelation, or science. These Vedas were treasures of wisdom and philosophies, which filled a reader’s mind with calm and soothing thoughts and ideas. They worked as guides for priests and those wanting to gain knowledge about the secrets of Hinduism. So in a sense, Vedic meditation works as a guide to reach internal bliss.
The Science Of Vedic Meditation
Just as the ancient yogis say good things about Vedic Meditation, science too has backed Vedic Meditation benefits for good health. Vedic based meditation has the most science behind its effectiveness. Science has proved that rewiring our brain through neuroplasticity can change our DNA. In that sense, Vedic meditation works in a similar fashion, of rewiring our mind, body and emotions, which can help eliminate hereditary diseases and ailments.
How To Do Vedic Meditation?
The good thing is Vedic meditation is for everyone! Plus, it can be practiced anywhere and at any time. If you have a distraction-filled, busy and stressful life, this meditation is for you. Practicing it is simple and easy unlike some forms of meditation that require doing something the right way. During a Vedic meditation practice, you just have to say a mantra repeatedly, over and over again. Take a look at the steps to do Vedic Meditation.
-
Find a quiet place to sit, if not, then you can practice this meditation wherever you wish (which we have mentioned earlier). Make sure your back and spine are supported. You can choose to sit on a chair for support or sit on the floor with a pillow underneath and something to support your back in good posture. Now close your eyes.
-
Take in a few breathes, allow your mind to settle then start to recite a mantra silently in your head. If you feel comfortable chanting out loud, do that way too. Recite the mantra repeatedly. You will want to use Sanskrit words for the purpose. A likely familiar mantra is the syllable ‘OM’ - the celestial sound of the universe, which can be a good mantra to get started. Take help from a guru or do some research to find the mantra that is specific to you.
-
There’s no focusing, controlling, concentrating or contemplating of the mind involved in Vedic Meditation. It has to be natural, simple and effortless. You don’t have to actually try to meditate like other forms but simply say the mantra repetitively.
-
After about 20 minutes of meditation, ease yourself back into your physical state. Begin by gently wiggling your fingers and toes. As you breathe, follow your chest as it rises and falls with each breath. Lastly, open your eyes slowly.
-
At the end of the practice, take a few moments to express gratitude, and reflect on how different your body feels as compared to the start of the session. Maintain that deep relaxation before moving on with the rest of the day.
-
It will take regular and disciplined practice to really feel comfortable in your Vedic Meditation practice. You might find that with every session, you’ll look forward to more each day.
